King Dog Postmortem

What went well

  • I finished a game! It’s small, but I finished something as a solo dev under a timeline.
  • I was able to polish parts of the game
    • Smooth-ish camera
    • Particles
    • Basic sfx
    • Animations
  • I learned how to make a SUPER basic cutscene
  • I feel like I hit the tone for the game I wanted. Something cute, endearing and “Untitled Goose Game” like.

What could have gone better

  • I crunched making this game on the last few days
  • Didn’t have a solid (or even loose) plan for what I wanted, I just had a vague “idea” in my head of what I was going to build.
  • Due to my self imposed rush I did not get to create a meaningful game loop.

Takeaways / Action Items / Keep Doing

  • No more procrastination, crunch, or waiting on longer form gamejams
  • Take the time upfront to outline the key project details in writing (Basic design doc)
    • Theme, game loop, enemies, what needs prototyping vs done-deal stuff, etc.
  • Keep refining the amount of polish and juice I can put into my games
  • Keep finishing games
